Goa Liberation Day Special 19th December, 2020 Goa Liberation Day - Even after India got Independence on 15th August 1947 Some regions of India were under the occupation of other countries. In which Goa, Diu-Daman, was under the rule of Portuguese. The "Goa Liberation Movement" was started to liberate Goa, Diu, Daman from Portuguese rule. As part of this movement, "Operation Vijay" was carried out by the Indian Army on 18 December 1961.

Operation Victory killed 30 Portuguese and captured 4668 Portuguese. While 22 of India's jawans received Virgati. Later the Portuguese Governor General of Goa de Silva accepted the surrender of the Government of India on the night of 19th December 1961 and the Portuguese rule came to an end from Goa Diu-Daman. So 19th December is celebrated as Goa Liberation Day. Then, under the 12th Constitutional Amendment of 1963, Diu-Daman and Goa were annexed to the Union of India and given the status of Union Territory.
